The Everyday Life Of A Dancer

By Marissa Velazquez

The everyday life of a dancer is pretty much the same no matter what style is being used. Despite the hard work that has to be done in order to achieve a certain level of success, many still pursue their dream of dancing professionally. This is due to the fact that the rewards outweigh all of the discipline that one has to endure. Here is a look at a typical day in the life of a ballet dancer.

A person in the dance industry usually starts their working day with a warm up class. These classes are very important because they help to gradually prepare the body for the grueling work ahead. The class might last for over an hour and usually involves stretches and other basic movements. When this is over, one is then ready for rehearsals.

Rehearsals can last for four to six hours and sometimes even longer. A person usually has a schedule showing them the different time slots for the show they are rehearsing for. If there are other dancers who are injured, the schedule can change so one has to always check to make sure they have the right time.

Injuries are common in the world of dance as it is also in the world of sports. This results in others having to fill the shoes of the person who has been injured. There are studio rehearsals and there are the stage rehearsals. The performers first go to the studio rehearsals where the space is smaller and various scenes are worked on.

The stage rehearsals are different from that done in the studio, because the space is larger and has the sets that will be used for the show. The music played is also live which can sound different from what is played using a CD player. So a person will be practicing in a place where the people will see them eventually.

When one is constantly using the body as an instrument in their work, it is very important that one has access to a physiotherapist and a massage therapist. These two professionals are critical to maintaining the health of the dancers. It is also important that one is healthy to begin with and maintain their health with sufficient sleep and proper food.

This means eating healthy whole foods and keeping hydrated. Most people stay away from junk food in order to keep their energy up. This enables one to keep up with the demands of their job which requires the use of their body. Sleep is also important, because when one is tired they are more prone to injuries.

This is a snapshot of the life of a dancer in the world of ballet. It requires discipline and very hard work in order to be the best in the industry. Even though the career of a dancer is shorter than most professions, one can look forward to other opportunities if they are very good at their craft.
