What Happens In A Theater

By Minnie Whitley

A city with a great mix of their wonderful artistry and rich culture. Phoenix is a community which gives credit and opportunities to their blossoming artists to express their craft and talent. To better compliment with the artistic inclination of the people, a lot of cultural facilities swarm the city. Students who obviously showcased unmatched talent in arts enjoyed scholarship grants from the city government. One way for them to channel their artist within is the Theater Phoenix.

Tourists locally and foreign are drawn to events and performances in the world famous Phoenix Convention Center. This cultural facility, along with others like the Orpheum and Herberger Theater is under the management of the Convention Center Department of the city. It is amazing how this side of Phoenix was a great contributor to the growth in the economy of the city and the state it belongs.

Theater has played an important role in the daily lives of people. Actors and artists believe that it is one form to express their selves. Everyday is treated important, like it would be their last performance. The Herberger Theater is a huge part of the performance arts of the city.

An auditorium or theatre is the place where performers would tell a story through a play or act. Music, dance, song, gesture and speech are important factors contributing to the visual and auditory experience of the viewers. To better express the reality in each scene and plot, the stage is decorated with lavish designs.

The history of the word, would take you to ancient Greece, where the word theatron, is used to describe a place of viewing. It also came from theaomai which means to watch, or to see, or observe. The Modern play of the West that you see today has been greatly influenced by Ancient Greek dramas. Characters and settings, themes, genres and even the technical aspects of theatre were borrowed from old Greek dramas.

There are different kinds of theater plays, namely, the drama, comedy, musical and tragedy. Comedy is probably the most enjoyable form which uses humor to narrate a story. Drama, as the word employs, tells of fiction and specific emotions in a play. A play which combines speech, dance and music is a musical. And tragedy, is another type of drama but in unique, mainly because it tells about the historical events in the civilization.

The Orpheum Theater is perhaps the most popular historic place in Phoenix. It was built in 1929, and the only remaining structure in Phoenix with a palatial inspired architecture. And it is the only one in the Phoenix region that is recognized National Register of Historic Places.

It can accommodate around one thousand three hundred people. The renovation done on the place made it a modern theatre with a classical touch. It was closed for renovation, but is now back in business since the 1997.

Any form of art is an expression of yourself. Being creative is always good. Some people are born with this special talent. And some discover their inner artist by study and practice. Always remember that your actions can be a reflection of what you feel. Most importantly, the performing arts are considered a part of what you are, cherish it.
