Production of films is an affair that makes use of very many members within the filming team. This means that many film crew jobs are grabbed in any movie producing company. The crew is always a very different group from the cast. The later is involved in the actual enactment of events in front of cameras, or contribute their voices in filming. They are also not synonymous to producers. The later are company shareholders or intellectual property.
Crews are composed of many departments that perform different jobs. The job description of each of these departments has been evolving with the passage of time. What used to be done a decade ago by one member of a department is not done today by somebody in the same position.
Three sections which complement one another are the major elements in producing moving pictures. These sections are the post-production phase, the principal image shooting and the pre-production sessions. Every event in shooting a movie is associated with one of these 3 areas. It is equally common to divide the crew into two groups; the above the line and below the line crews.
The director in a production is not always a member of any department in the production team. He/she oversees the flow and series of actions that make up the plot. He gives instructions and organizes actors. It is also his responsibility to choose a setting that is appropriate for every scene. He tells camera men where to put their cameras, and controls the amount of light needed.
Another very crucial factor in this industry is production. A lot of people have never considered it as a department. They have, rather, always seen as a series of functional categories. This section is composed of the senior producer, the executive producer, the production manager, production coordinators and vice coordinators, a few assistant directors, accounting officers and location managers.
The production office is made up of line producers and the production assistant. The line producer is in charge of liaising with their studio and the manager of production who also manages the budget of producing the movie. His job title alludes to the fact that he is available and in charge of lining up materials needed. Production assistants, on the other hand, are individuals whose responsibility is assisting the producing team with general duties.
The department of accounts is equally an important element in filming. Members of this department are responsible for handling all financial affairs. They make sure that all participants get their dues, and every matter involving finances is accomplished as stated in the budget. In Hollywood, only one department handles the financial matters of filming.
The locations department led by a location manager, deals with securing place settings for the team. They clear the places before granting permission for using them. They have other junior members under them. These are the assistant location manager, location scout, location production deputy and location assistant.
The last area we shall discuss is that charged with providing continuity. These people follow every single scene keenly to ensure that actors do their parts as planned. In case of any deviation, they prompt people responsible for corrections. There are many people involved in filming, and these are only few of them.
