Classic TV Sitcoms Are Now Available

By Ida Dorsey

Anyone living in America knows all about METV and Atenna TV which are readily available seven days during the week. These two stations will broadcast some of the best classic tv sitcoms known to all mankind. Viewers can get to see all of their favorite actors from the past whenever they turn on these certain shows. Everyone in England is certainly a fan of the very funny series called "Are You Being Served?"

"Are You Being Served?" was introduced back in the early 70's and people really took a liking to this unusual program. Each individual around enjoyed seeing the different colors that Mrs. Slocombe would wear her hair each week. This was an odd character who never failed to make every single person within the audience laugh. Molly Sugden was able to play this key person through the entire run of the series. She and the other cast members had such grace and style.

"Keeping Up Appearances" proved to be successful with the upper and lower class families around England. Everyone loved to hate the dreadful Hyacinth Bucket. Even though Hyacinth was middle class she was a horrible person who tried to live an extravagant lifestyle. Over the weekends this lady would invite all of her neighbors to a candle light supper. Many of the residents refused to attend her social events. Mrs. Bucket had three sisters on this particular series and they did not like her behavior.

CBS was very lucky to put on a show called "The Beverly Hillbillies" during the 1960's. Granny was a little old lady who enjoyed making moonshine and fighting with the banker's wife. Ellie Mae was a character straight out of Li'l Abner and she was indeed a blonde bombshell.

Every person alive felt sorry for the big dumb man called Jethro. Mr. Jethro Bodine only had a fifth grade education even though he was over eighteen. His uncle Jed was now a millionaire who could buy Jethro any item on Earth that he desired. CBS also created a program which featured three females and four males who were stranded.

Even though "Gilligan's Island" only lasted for only three years it was still a popular show. Many women watched this series to view the very intelligent man called the professor. He was a charming fellow who could solve almost any problem. Unfortunately the professor could not get the other castaways off the island. Ginger, Mary Ann, the Skipper and the Howells were also part of this group.

Jackie Gleason was able to make his character of Ralph Kramden very popular on "The Honeymooners." He lived with his faithful wife Alice and the duo enjoyed having Trixie and Ed Norton for their neighbors. The series only ran for one year and it is still seen in syndication.

During the 1960's there was also a family of five living in New York City. They were all on a program called "Family Affair." The major player on this series was a man named Bill and he shared an apartment with Sissy, Jody, Buffy and Mr. French. At times Mr. French seemed a bit jealous of the children since he wanted to live a childless life. As the series went on this great man from England became a second father figure to the three small tykes.
