Those who have witnessed the rise of the anime industry will agree that its influence is starting to go global as well. This popularity is no longer just limited to the long running favorite series Naruto which is coming to an end. At present, teens and adults across different continents are consuming different genres of anime that they can get their hands into.
Among the popular picks are the mecha series which reflects technological innovation we have at present and an ambitious but appealing attempt to portray earth and its future hundreds of years from now. One mecha series which has left a mark on its viewers is Code Geass. Before twenty fourteen ends, we will try to recap the highlights that made this a success in this Code Geass anime review.
A dominant theme that has fueled the entire series is revenge. It is about a young Britannian prince who lived in Japan under a different name, Lelouch Lamperouge, in order to find out the culprit of the assassination attempt to him and to his family when he was still a kid. Lelouch looks like any other teens of his age. What they do not know however is the scheme he is plotting to take down the Britannian empire who has conquered Japan.
Characters. This series goes beyond what an anime fan could consider competent in terms of characterization. The characters are solid, relatable and lovely. They can easily be distinguished from one another. More importantly they have their own principles which they managed to portray really well.
Friendship and romance. In a story which centers on war, revenge and politics, it is easy to dismiss the idea of making a good sideline story that has a touch of friendship and romance. But Code Geass manage to do just that. And it is not the type of story that just exists for the sake of having it. It has been weaved into the series real good that it managed to draw out more emotions from the viewers.
Family feud. For the sake of revenge, the main character is willing to fight against his own family. This is what makes Lelouch a good character. Apart from the wit and strong will power he posses, he knows what he was doing and stays true to what he believes. While he became more like antagonistic in the end, one cannot just push a good character away with a clear motivation.
Combat and weapons. The story is set in an era where Japan has been conquered and the ruling country in the world is Britannia. It is futuristic but not as advanced as the one we see in the Gundam series. Nevertheless, we are treated to epic battles with dramatic deaths added with a spice of surprise.
Engaging plot. The main reason why this has garnered solid fandom and viewership is because of its great story which is engaging, intriguing and relatable. Characters were introduced for a reason and revelations were presented at the right moment to capture, increase or destroy the prevailing emotion on the story.
The anime may have already ended, but this did not stop discussions on online forums as to the possibility of a third season. If you are someone who loves an awesome story with great characters, Code Geass is definitely a must watch. If you have watched it, feel free to share your comments.
