Children With Delays In Communication Skills Are Helped By Social Thinking Therapists In Houston, TX

Everyone participates in this type of thinking on a daily basis. It simply means we consider the ways in which we interact with others. There are social thinking therapists in Houston, TX and other locations who practice this type of therapy to assist people in improving communicative skills.

These abilities are developed from the day they are born in the average individual. While interacting with parents and siblings their emotions are shown to family members in unspoken ways. Body language is one example of this. But those with autism, Aspergers syndrome or a learning disability of another kind do not understand this. It is known that there is no correlation between IQ and communicative abilities.

Many can score high on IQ tests and have limited ability when it comes to learning the social nuances. Most commonly those with autism, ADHD and Aspergers syndrome experience this lack. An infant starts to learn language and how to communicate from birth on. The toddler is already learning societal skills. If a child talks to others alot he becomes knowledgeable about the way others think.

The neurotypical child of four years shows understanding about what he perceives others as thinking. By the time he reaches six, he understands that people can do bad things such as cheating or stealing. He will also learn it is possible to manipulate another child.

This ability seems to be mandatory if the child is to learn problem solving, how to interpret communicative intent and reading comprehension as well. Abstract communal language and interpreting the meaning of communication are essential for academic success. These abilities do not develop in the child with autism or a learning disorder.

Only direct teaching methodologies can succeed at doing this for him. It remains a difficult task for him to consider that the feelings of others are separate from his. But, with the right therapy it can be accomplished.

Even the skill of making eye contact as communication takes place requires special teaching methods for this child. Therapists study how the neurotypical child acquires this and other sociable skills. They then develop methods of helping the child with autism who is high-functioning or has Aspergers syndrome.

A method known to be successful is the ILAUGH model. Parents as well as therapists can use it. The therapist starts by focusing in on a childs strongest points and using this method to reinforce them and develop new ones.

While most children do understand that societal skills and academic learning are inter-related. The child lacking in that understanding is able to speak about himself, but not other people. He will never learn to ask for help unless the therapist can teach him how to interact with others.
