Information Regarding Rare Postage Stamps

By Angela Turner

A lot of people decide to take up stamp collecting as a hobby across the world and it continues to be a popular pastime. With many thousands of examples to choose from it can take years to build up an extensive collection. There are a few things that will determine their value and those who collect rare postage stamps will do many hours of research before buying.

Postage stamps were introduced in the United Kingdom in 1840 and the first one is known as the penny black. Unused mint examples of this are extremely rare and valuable but some used ones can be found and purchased for between one and two hundred dollars. There are stamps from other countries in the world which are much more recent and which sell for higher prices.

Some collectors will tend to stick to one specific area of postage stamp. Airmail, commemorative and first day issues are popular with many philatelists. Others will specialize in stamps featuring birds, animals or famous people. Some will collect misprints where the image on the stamp has been printed upside down or maybe in the wrong color than was intended.

When a postage stamp is offered for sale it will be graded by experts and this can range from a poor example to an extra fine one. Poor means it is in bad condition and will be the least sought after and of little value. An extra fine example will be perfect and these are the ones that most serious buyers and enthusiasts will be looking for.

Before starting a collection a few essential items and tools will be need to be purchased to help keep your items in good original condition. An album to display stamps will be needed and maybe adhesive backed hinges to mount them. Tongs, a magnifying glass and gloves are also useful to help preserve the condition of your collection.

Rare and valuable examples can be found in a few different places and some care is needed when paying a lot of money for an example. Dealers can be found in many cities who deal in collectible examples and many are sold at auction. There are also online dealers who buy and sell valuable stamps and also many private collectors. Philatelists clubs are also a good place to find items and to meet other collectors.

When you are thinking of starting a stamp collection or buying to improve an existing one there is a little homework to be done to avoid costly errors. Many examples of postage stamp have an extremely high value and so they are often forged and offered for sale as the genuine article. If you choose to buy privately it is advisable to get any potential purchases authenticated by an expert before buying.

With any collection of valuable items or antiques, adequate insurance should be in place to cover your items against and loss or damages. Many homes will have contents cover in place but this will probably not be sufficient for a valuable stamp collection. There are insurance firms in business who specialize in providing cover for collectibles and a few quotes should be obtained and prices compared.
