By Larry Clark

The use of marketing communication in the promotion and selling of commodities is what is referred to as advertising. Companies engage in the advertisement of commodities or their businesses for several different reason. Sometimes the reasons is achieved while in others completely different results are achieved. This article presents some basic information that one needs to know about before making the decision to advertise in Belize. The information is generally about the activity of advertising.

The history of advertising is a long one and historical evidence traces it in many civilizations of ancient times. Papyrus was used to make wall posters and sales messages in Egypt while in Ancient Arabia, commercial texts and political campaign displays have been found in the Pompeii ruins. Advertising of the lost and found form was very common in Ancient Rome and Greek. Wall and rock paintings are also a strong suggestion of existence of advertising in the ancient world.

Evidence of rock and wall painting for commercial advertisement has been found in several parts of South America, Africa, Europe, Australia, North America, and Asia. The origin of wall painting is traceable to Indian rock art painting practices. The Indian rock art paintings goes as back as the 4000 BC. According to Classic of Poetry, ancient China engaged in advertising in the form of bamboo flute playing, which was used in selling candy.

Apart from being used to sell and promote commodities, advertising can also be used to reassure shareholders and workers of the success and viability of the business. Commercial adverts through branding increase consumption of commodities. Proper branding assists consumers to link certain qualities to certain commodities. People who pay for the messages viewed in the adverts are called sponsors and the messages appear in different media outlets.

Different media outlets are used to air including direct mail, magazines, television, text messages, newspapers, the internet, and radio. Commercial and non-commercial advertisers are the two major kinds of advertisers in existence today. Like the name suggests, commercial advertisers are involved with advertising consumer commodities and they are usually businesses.

Non-commercial advertisers engage in advertising to advertise non-consumer services and products. Major examples of non-commercial advertisers are religious organizations, governmental agencies, interest groups, and political parties. They may use free modes of persuasion like public service announcement. In the year 2015, the world spent an estimated amount of 592.43 billion US Dollars in advertising. Internationally, there are four major advertising conglomerates. The four are WPP, Publicis, Omnicom, and Interpublic.

Products and services can be advertised in any medium. Commercial advertising is done in media such as wall paintings, mobile telephone screens, cinema, web banners, in-flight advertisements, bathrooms stalls, posters, billboards, town criers, and skywriting among others. In Belize, types of advertising in use are many. They include television, radio, press, billboard, mobile billboard, informercials, online, in-store, coffee cup, domain name, sheltered outdoor, and street advertising.

Regulation in the advertisement industry has always been important as a way of protecting public interests. Restriction of the advertisement of tobacco on television is an example of regulation in the industry. Advertising to children is an area of great contention in the European zone.
