Benefits That A Limestone Road Base Has Over Other Materials

By Barbara Campbell

Civil engineering and the durability of materials are very important matters when building any structure. There is a constant need to balance both he availability of resources and how effective they are when used in a project. One material that is very sought after is limestone.

While there is a lot of social issues going on with this practice, there is no denying the usefulness of the material. A limestone road base is one that is most used and have other functions of this resource apart from using it as walls for buildings, cement aggregate and slab filling. This among the many others.

The stone is usually crushed, used and mixed for different purposes. As a road base, limestone is an aggregate. Heavy equipment of different models is often used to process the material and crush it in ideal sizes to be fit for usage. Not only is this used for commercial structures, but also in residential areas and buildings.

The same element is also used for piping projects done underground. Since the material is both durable and flexible it does not compromise the structure of the pipes. This is considered that it is used to bend the pipe and insulate the structure from external forces that might damage it. These forces can range from movement from the traffic above to soil moisture.

Its versatility is one of the most sought after properties among aggregate. This is why quarrying is a huge industry. They produce so much of this stuff to sell to construction industries in the expense of damage to the environment. A matter of construction and aesthetic this type of aggregate combines it flexibility in color, shaping and as mentioned earlier, durability.

Since this process of getting the resource is widely practiced, the supply of limestone is always on par or even exceeding its demand. This makes the material very affordable. It also is accessible in many places. Due to lime being a naturally occurring sediment, there is no need to go to an extra special location to find it. This is makes it a big thumbs up for huge construction companies, since it makes their over all expenditure on production lesser.

Lime is also quite aesthetically versatile. It does not only limit its colors to pale white to light yellow. Some colors of its colors vary from red, brown, black and blue when mixed with other compounds. It also makes great for customized construction uses since it is very easy to cut. While its surface might be corrosive, a limestone structure will stay intact, essentially. A great example for this are the great Pyramids of Egypt.

Stabilization of the soil as a foundation is probably the biggest reason why this is used so much in construction. Lime helps improve plasticity, speeds up the drying of wet soil and increase overall foundation strength. The finished structures made of this is sure to be safe and easy to work with for those who are on the project site.

Residential projects also revel in using this product not only because of its wide availability but since it tends to be cheaper than marble and granite. It is also easy to cut slabs of lime into different shape which makes it great for customization and other specifics for a building. It also does not get eaten like wood or rot when they get wet.
