Ways Of Using Learning Language Conventions Picture Book

By Barbara Powell

It is believed that man did not develop language until an advanced stage in evolution. This suggests that before then they use sign language and drawings to communicate. One can be able to tell a whole story just by observing a single picture. That is how messages can be interpreted from the sites where people used to live. So learning language conventions picture book is indeed possible.

Students in between the ages of 1-13 can use picture books as a form of learning visual communication. Some books are purely pictorial while others are a combination of written and pictures. The words must, however, relate directly to the picture in order to bring out the message. The techniques used in picture books make certain that the audience the book is meant for, and the purpose of it is clear.

Pictures can be made with a consistent appearance of lines knows as line work. It can be made using ink of various colors. The lines or blocks of color give a lot of detail, and you can tell what the picture is about. The tone work may include shading which brings out the gentleness in the picture. Border line techniques bring out a dynamic feeling.

After you teach the various kinds of conventions to look out for. You should encourage the students to study more picture books. With more experience, they can be able to tell almost everything the artist is trying to say in the picture. After a while, the students can also be able to use convention to send messages across and put various emotions.

There are the conventions of the narrative. A narrative can be in the form of a film, television program or a novel. The students look at it pretty much the same way. Both films and novels are divided into 3 act segments. It starts with a few characters who brew conflict. After a while, they bring complications in the second segment and the climax which is the last segment is the third segment is where everything is solved.

There is symbolism in almost every work of literature. It is also present in a pictorial book. If there appear a storm and a lot of lightning it may symbolize that something bad is bound to happen eventually. A gloomy weather is also a sign of low spirits. If there is the presence of bright sunshine and clear skies, that seems to be a jovial story.

The form in which as story Is also presented tells a lot. A film may be presented in a series of flashbacks of things that happened before the main plot. This film may be a story of a person or a group of people looking back on their lives. A picture book can be presented in a set of collages. The style and organization affect the message put across visually.

The setting on which the picture book is based also tells a lot. For example, if a person wearing animal skin and had unkempt hair were to appear, you can tell just by looking that the setting is of a very long time ago. If the picture, however, includes a series of space ships or robot-like figures you can tell the message is based in the future.
