The Definition Of An Indie Artist

By Edward Harris

When it comes to independence, it can often be difficult when it comes to making a living. For, most individuals start out working for others, whether as a high school or college graduate. While this is the case, there are some ways to experience more freedom, one of which is becoming an indie artist.

In many cases, these individuals work from the bottom up. While this is the case, those whom are most successful eventually get to the point of becoming self-supporting artists whom can live on the income the art provides. As such, rather than instant stardom, these individuals often have to work long and hard to reach this level of success.

These individuals are people whom have a drive to move ahead in the business by making the right choices. In addition, to be an independent artist means that the individual is responsible for all creation, production and promotion of projects related to art, music, sculpture or poetry. Whereas, most of these individuals see no need to ask permission or seek approval from anyone to display or perform work.

In most cases, these individuals will set goals which once achieved are celebrated, such as an art opening at a gallery, playing a concert or performing as a feature at a bookstore or festival. For, most live on a day to day basis while creating whatever art form is of the most interest. As with all artists, these individuals often make a living with art projects, art shows, concerts, readings and piece work.

When it comes poets, there are many whom attend National or International Poetry festivals each year. In doing so, the individuals often has a chance perform in front of other poets and spoken word fans as a feature. Whereas, there are often poetry slams at which individuals can perform in hopes of winning money. For those not comfortable with competition, there are often areas in which poets can also sell a number of poetry related products such as books and CDs.

Feedback, whether positive or negative, can often have a major impact on these artists. For, in most cases, an individual will take the information and use it toward personal growth. Whereas, there are some whom will no doubt take offense, even when it comes to constructive criticism. For, there are artists whom believe that beauty in art, as in life, is in the eye of the beholder.

In most areas, there are classes and workshops in different areas of arts and entertainment. For, while a degree is not required to become an independent artist, it can often pay to gain knowledge, insight and experience from others in the art world. In some cases, just attending a one-day class in a particular discipline can benefit individuals desiring to become successful independent artists.

Whatever the case, a true independent artist creates a way to succeed without the help of others. For, as the term indicates, independent means getting things done with the talents and materials with which one has to do so. Once having completed a project or piece of work, an independent artist then goes out and shares the creation with the world at large.
