Do You Have What It Takes To Become A Concert Promoter

By Paul Long

If you have a passion for music, and want to have a career that includes it, you should prepare for a long, difficult road. Playing in a band is not the only option you have. You might have a great career behind the scenes as a concert promoter for instance. To make a success of this job, there are a number of skill sets you will have to develop. You have to become proficient at managing, marketing, logistics, and communicating. You will also have to become a media savvy entrepreneur.

Some promoters have college educations and others don't. Experts in the field say whatever your level of education, you must learn how to write. Most people aren't naturals writers, so that means taking courses in English grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. You have to be able to write great press releases. You must learn to write compelling copy. If you already love to read, you will be ahead of the game.

There are other skills you'll have to hone before you have any chance of landing a job promoting concerts. You could blog about the music and nightclub scene wherever you are going to college. You need to learn how to use a camera in a nightclub and what it takes to get good photos. You'll also need to learn the software that improves the quality of photos and makes them stand outs.

Successful promoters all agree that anyone who is interested in this business must first become a performer. You can take up an instrument or learn how to DJ. Whatever you decide, it is important to stick with it, so you will understand how the performers you book think and what is involved with putting on a show. You should be able to set up band gear and break it down.

When you start applying for a job in the field, you must be able to present a relevant resume. Managers will be looking for writing samples like blogs. These will be invaluable to them when deciding on the best candidates at the entry level. Successful applicants will know how to create spreadsheets and edit graphics.

To become successful in this business you have to be detail oriented. You must decide what kind of promoter you are going to be. Some just want to throw parties, and others specialize in booking celebrities into clubs.

The most successful promoters made it a point to attend shows in all kinds of genres. They went to jazz clubs and operas. They also attended electronic dance music festivals and rock concerts. They watched what promoters did between sets, the fencing and security setups, and even the number of drinks the bartender poured during the night.

You will be surprised at the skills you gain along the way. You'll become an adept marketing manager and well as learn how to manage the vast array of volunteers needed for big events. If you love music and have a talent for knowing what audiences want, you have a chance at success.
